Lata Mangeshkar The Nightingale Of India

Lata Mangeshkar The Nightingale Of India, the name is enough to describe the person. She was an Indian playback singer who also dabbled in music composition. She is usually recognized as one of India’s most talented and influential singers. Not only in India, music lovers all over the world know her.

Lata Mangeshkar, a famous Indian singer who charmed generations of Bollywood fans as the singer behind numerous actresses, passed away on 6 February 2022 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, India. She died at 92 years old.

Lata Mangeshkar’s Childhood

The Nightingale of India was born in 1929 in Indore, India (Mumbai, Maharashtra, now). Her father Deenanath Mangeshkar was an Indian classical singer and theater actor. She was the family’s oldest kid. Lata Mangeshkar had 4 siblings. Asha Bhosle is another famous Indian singer, Meena, Usha, and Hridaynath.

Her father was the one who gave her her first music instruction. She began acting in her father’s theatrical dramas when she was five years old. Lata Mangeshkar’s birth name is Hema. The name Lata was inspired by a character named ‘Latika’ in her father’s play BhaawBandhan.

Lata Mangeshkar’s singing Career

Apart from her father, Lata Mangeshkar learned music from legends such as Aman Ali Khan Sahib and Amanat Khan. Her debut song was recorded in 1942 for the Marathi film Kiti Hasaal, but it was cut from the film and never released. Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani was the title of the song. Despite the fact that Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai is her first Marathi song.

She was initially turned down as a playback singer in the film industry. Singers like Noor Jehan and Shamshad Begum ruled the charts at the time. In juxtaposition to the heavy-nasal voices belting records, she was told her voice was ‘too flat’ for the moment.

She gave Indian film music a new characteristic style of singing, breaking away from mehfil-type performances to fit both modern and traditional heroines. She possessed enough weight in her voice to give definitive structure to the melody of Indian film songs while having a tenor range voice with less volume or intensity. Despite having weak coloratura abilities in her early career, she improved her tone and pitch as her playback career evolved.

Her big break came in 1949 with the film Mahal’s song Aayega Aanewala. With a song that few people can gather the bravery to sing, she became an overnight superstar.

For numerous music directors, she easily vibes between diverse genres. She sang raga-based songs like ‘MoheBhool Gaye Sawariya’ from the 1952 film BaijuBawra, which was based on Raga Bhairav. She sang Bhajans like Allah Tero Naam for the film Hum Dono in 1961, as well as western theme songs like ‘Ajeeb Dastan Hain Yeh’ from Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960). From Madhubala to Meena Kumari, she was the voice behind the most gorgeous heroines of the time.

When Lata performed Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon to honor the martyrs of the war against China in 1962, it became famous. With her version of the iconic patriotic hymn ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon,’ she drew guests, including Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, to tears.

Lata Mangeshkar worked on compositions by Rahul Dev Burman, her brother-in-law, throughout the 1980s. R.D., who was renowned for preferring Asha Bhosle’s voice for his diverse compositions, chose Lataji’s voice for more lyrical songs.

Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, and A.R. Rahman were among the music directors with whom Lataji collaborated.

Lata Mangeshkar Songs

Lata Mangeshkar recorded nearly 27,000 songs in 36 regional and international languages during the course of her seven-decade career. She sang in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil,  Russian, Kannada, and many more.

In an interview, she revealed that it was hard for her to sing in Russian and Tamil.” I found Tamil to be really tough to understand. I’d jot down all of the lines in English and then practice pronouncing them because they’re really fussy about accent and diction. My other major obstacle was performing in Russian on stage. It was difficult. My Russian songs are nowhere to be found because my renditions were not permitted to be recorded. What I sang on stage was the only thing that stayed with me.”

Her last full Bollywood album was VeerZara.

In 2015, Lata Mangeshkar recorded her last song for an Indo-Pak homosexual love story. She worked as a playback singer for 73 years, from 1942 to 2015.
